English 9 Journal and Writing Prompts 2013-2014

A proper journal entry must be dated, written in a complete sentence, and have proper capitalization and punctuation.
Example of an incorrect journal entry answering the question:  'What are your goals for this year?'
Incorrect:   "To get good grades."    Why?  Not a complete sentence
                   "my goal is to get good grades."    Why?  No capitalization.
                   "My goal is to get good grades"    Why?  No period.
Correct:    "My goal this school year is to get good grades."
Friday, September 6----Give two to three goals that that you set for yourself for this school year and tell how you are going to achieve them.
Monday, September 9---On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your writing ability?  What is your strength?  What is your weakness?
Tuesday, September 10--What type of book do you enjoy most?  Why? 
Wednesday, September 11--What types of characters will you find in most books and movies?  ex.  hero, villain, etc. 
Thursday, September 12--What is the biggest obstacle you face in your life?  Why?
Friday, September 13--If you had a mythological power, what would it be, and what enemy or villain would you battle?  Why? 
Monday, September 16--What is a major problem or conflict that many people face in the modern world today?  
Tuesday, September 17---Imagine your biggest obstacle as a monster.  Then describe the monster.  (Example--depression as a black dog, or lack of money as an giant empty wallet)
Wednesday, September 18--- Write a one-sentence myth with a hero, an obstacle, a god, and a solution.
Thursday, September 19--What do you find the most difficult thing about writing to be?  Why?
Friday, September 20---What is the best book you ever read and what made you like it?
Monday, September 23--How is your reading project going? You have to read two books by the end of the trimester.  
Tuesday, September 24--What is your favorite amphibian and why?
Wednesday, September 25--Give one or two of the most interesting facts you know about the Greek gods and goddesses.
Thursday, September 26--What is a good name for a hero?  A villain?  A god or goddess?  A monster?  Complete sentence.
Friday, September 27--Write a paragraph using the Emotion Bowl as your epic struggle between good and evil.  Use a god or goddess to help your hero defeat his rival.
Monday, September 30--How are you doing in this class this year?  Why?  What could you do better? What could I do better?
Tuesday, October 1--What is a hero? What are some qualities of a hero?
Wednesday, October 2--What are some of the obstacles you had to overcome on your own epic journey or odyssey?
Thursday, October 3--What are some of your qualities that allowed you to overcome obstacles in your life?
Friday, October 4--No school
Monday, October 7--What is the most difficult trip you've ever made?  Explain.
Tuesday, October 8--
Wednesday, October 9--Have you ever had an unusual encounter with an animal, such as a bear attack, dog attack, etc?
Thursday, October 10--What is your tragic flaw?
Friday, October 11--You are locked into the basement cellar of a madman.  All you have is a lighter, a pocket knife, and a hair pin.  How do you escape?
Monday, October 14--No journal.  We were STAR testing.
Tuesday, October 15--
Wednesday, October 16--Create a mythological creature by combining three different animals.  Give it a name.
Thursday, October 17--Complete this sentence:  "Nothing would ever be the same after I _______"
Monday, October 21--What is your earliest memory?  Describe it.
Tuesday, October 22--
Wednesday, October 23--Compare yourself to an animal and explain the similarities.
Thursday, October 24-Most embarrassing moment. 
Friday, October 25--  None
Monday, October 28-- What is your greatest skill and why?
Tuesday, October 29--Which of Odysseus's adventures did you enjoy the most and why?
Wednesday October 30--Do you prefer cats or dogs?  Why?
Thursday, October 31--Best Halloween memory.
Friday, November 1--What animal are you most like and why?
Monday, November 4--none
Tuesday, November 5--none.
Wednesday, November 6--Post card story.
Thursday, November 7--Write a poem with all the following words:  Cleveland, pot-bellied pigs, babies, lobster, Volkswagen, rose, blood, love. 
Friday, November 8 --Describe color to a person born blind.
Monday, November 11--Post card writing
Tuesday, November 12--If you could suddenly speak to your pet, record six lines of the first things you would say to each other. 
Wednesday, November 13--Scariest moment.
Tuesday, December 17--Write the best first line to a story that you can think of.
Monday, January 6, 2014--What did you do during the vacation?
Tuesday, January 7--Describe your favorite place, using as many of the senses as possible.
Wednesday, January 8--If you had to go live alone on an island for one year, what five books, five CDs and 5 movies would you take along and why?





Writing Prompt One, September 9:   My plan for success as a 9th grader at Idaho Falls High School.
Begin in-class, finish by Tuesday.  Double-spaced, pencil or pen.   This is a baseline essay and will be done with no prior instruction.
