Epic, Myth, Archtype

  • Epic--- a long narrative poem with a hero who must overcome many obstacles on a journey or quest.  
  • Myth--an ancient story that attempts to explain the unexplainable, teaches a moral lesson, or both.
  • Archtype--a person, thing, or theme that appears over and over in literature
    • Hero--the main character in a literary work
    • Shadow or Villain--the character who opposes the hero
    • Mentor---a character who guides the hero
    • Herald--a character who delivers a call to adventure to the hero
    • Threshold Guardians---characters who are obstacles, sometimes enemies or gatekeepers, and sometimes even the hero's own fears.
    • Shapeshifters---change shapes/represent change.  Vampires, werewolves, beasts.
    • Tricksters--clowns and mischief-makers
    • Allies--those who help the hero
    • Woman as Temptress--a woman who tries to ensnare the hero

Assignment:  Write a myth.  Handout for brainstorming and outlining structure will be given.



Preparing to Read the Odyssey

Hero--a main character in a story, one who has good qualities and can be related to by the reader.
Tragic Hero--a main character who has good qualities, but also has a tragic flaw that makes him /her come to a sad end.
Epic Hero--A main character who must overcome many obstacles in order to complete a journey.
